What pests are common in Brisbane?

If you’re new to Brisbane or have just moved to the northside you might be wondering to yourself, ‘what types of insects and pests are found in Brisbane?’. Well wonder no more. We’re going to break it down for you and give you a list of pests, insects, rodents, bugs, beetles and creepy crawlies that you might see in and around Brisbane.

If you’ve seen any of the following pests and would like to keep them out of your home, call us today for a pest inspection. Brisbane customers can contact us on 1300 057 067 and we can organise a pest inspection and review for your home.

What pests can be found in Brisbane

Before we dive into all the different types of pests that can be found in and around Brisbane, let’s look at how we might categorise them. This helps us to look at the different types of animals that may need extermination or chemical treatments to keep out of your home. Some of these pests are harmless to humans and are more of a bother than a threat – others will put your family's safety in danger and should be dealt with as quickly as possible by a professional.

There are many different types of insects that can invade and infest your home. Some of them are not very likable but won’t harm much (like cockroaches and ants – although fire ants are a different story!) and others will do damage to either your home, what’s inside your home or possibly the people in your home (like moths, termites, bed bugs and spiders, etc). Let’s take a look at all these types of pests and what potential damage they can do.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches – no-one likes them and our instinct is to get rid of them with some spray (or a well placed hit with a thong) whenever we see one. Whilst one to two aren’t a threat to your health or the health of your family, an infestation can help to spread certain diseases and can affect people with sensitivities or allergies.

There’s a few different types of cockroaches you may encounter in and around Brisbane and the best way to get rid of them is to have a Brisbane pest control company come to your home to conduct a cockroach and pest treatment.

Australian cockroachAustralian Cockroach (Periplaneta Periplaneta)
These are some of the most common cockroaches you will see in and around Brisbane as our winters are pretty mild. Despite having the name Australian Cockroach, they’re actually an introduced species.

American cockroachAmerican Cockroach (Periplaneta americana)
Probably one of the larger species of cockroaches you will see around Brisbane. These guys like to scamper around in darker areas of your home so they’re likely to show up in your kitchen, under fridges and dishwashers or in your basement if you have one or under the house.

Smoky Brown CockroachSmoky Brown Cockroach (Periplaneta fuliginosa)
These guys are usually found outside under logs and tree bark and under buildings. Quite often they’re mistaken for Australian or American cockroaches, but they are smaller and usually only come out at night.

oriental cockroachOriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis)
If you’re going to find these guys around your home it’s likely they will be hanging around your wheelie bins or compost pile as they typically feed on garbage and leaf litter.

Termites

Termites are the pest that no-one wants to get into their homes. If you think you might have termites in your home and are wondering what the signs are, check out our article How to tell if termites are active in your house. Termites can do untold damage to your home that can run into the thousands and even tens of thousands of dollars to fix if they do a lot of damage.

Did you know there’s over 300 different species of termites in Australia, but there’s a particular family of termites that cause a large percentage of problems in suburban homes? Out of all the different types of species of termites we see in and around Brisbane homes, the native Coptotermes spp is by far the most prevalent and does the most damage.

There are other families like the Heterotermes ferox, Schedorhinotermes intermedius and Nasutitermes genus that can damage homes and wooden structures, but the termite we see the most when conducting Brisbane termite inspections is the Coptotermes genus.

If you have found termites in and around your home please call us on 3882 5351 to organise a termite treatment ASAP.

Bed Bugs

bed bugWe’ve put bed bugs into their own category as they’re some people’s worst nightmare. Settling down for a good night's sleep only to wake and find bites all over you and little droplets of blood on your sheets can leave people feeling dirty and makes their skin crawl – literally!

Most bed bugs we treat here at Abolish Termite & Pest Management are (Cimex lectularius) that feed on human blood. They’re usually around 5-6mm long and can be hard to see. If you wake up and have bites or red marks over your body, chances are they’re caused by bed bugs. We recommend checking sheets for signs of blood and fecal matter (theirs, not yours!) and look over your sheet with a magnifying glass to see if you can find some live insects.

If you think you might have bed bugs, talk to us today about our pest treatment options. Call 1300 057 067.

Ants

Ants are everywhere and they’re notoriously difficult to get rid of. Our professional ant control and treatment options give Brisbane customers the knowledge that we will get rid of the ants that are in your home and keep them out!

There’s a few different varieties of ants that we come across on a regular basis. Here’s a few of them.

black house antsBlack House Ants
We’ve all had these get into our home at one time or another and they often find their way in when rain is coming (animals can be amazing indicators of weather patterns that we can’t detect). Other times they are foraging for food and find their way into your home (usually in and around the kitchen).

green antGreen Ants or Green Head Ants
These guys love to make their nests in your backyard and have a pretty nasty bite to them. Rather than reverting to pouring a jug of hot water down the nest or going to your local hardware store for pesticides that may or may not work, call us on 1300 057 067 to get a Brisbane green ant treatment done and we will make sure your kids can play safely in your backyard again.

Fireants
Fireants are an introduced species and can be very dangerous. Their bite is incredibly painful and they can be harmful to humans and especially pets.

If you believe there are fire ants at your property, phone the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) on 13 25 23. DAF will inspect your property and carry out a treatment of the nest. There is no charge for the inspection or treatment.

Wasps

Some people see these guys as pure, flying, stinging evil. We totally understand where they’re coming from. If you’ve ever been attacked by a wasps (or multiple wasps) you will know what we mean.

Most of the wasp species we see in and around Brisbane are the yellowjacket wasp and the European and English wasp. All of these species will sting and build nests made out of chewed wood pulp and saliva and will have a papery look about them. They will start off small but they can build up to the size of footballs and even larger.

If you’ve found a wasp’s nest or have an infestation give us a call on 1300 057 067 and we will get rid of it for you and put in place a wasp treatment plan to ensure they don’t come back.

Rodents

Rodents in the home can not only be a pest, they can be carriers of disease so getting rid of them is something you will certainly want to do. Rodents are found in pretty much every country in the world and are drawn to homes because they’re warm, dry and provide opportunities for food and nesting.

Rats
There are multiple diseases that rats are known to transmit so eliminating them completely from your home is important. If you’re seeing signs of rats around your Brisbane home (rodent poo, chewed cabling or noises coming from your roof and walls) give us a call on 1300 057 067.

Mice
An introduced species, mice can also carry disease but are also known to contaminate food and also cause house fires by chewing through electrical cables. If mouse traps and baits (or your good-for-nothing-cat) aren’t getting rid of mice from your home, we can help.

This is our list of pests that you will find around Brisbane. We hope you don’t find any these in your home, but if you do, call us today on 1300 057 067 to talk about pest control options.
