TERMITE AND PEST CONTROL BRISBANE
Pest control for silverfish
Silverfish are a pest nobody wants in their home.
Small, hard to see and usually active in out-of-the-way places, silverfish will eat anything that’s made from paper or cardboard. Typically you will find them in garages and sheds and love to chow down on boxes of paperwork, photos, newspapers or anything else that has cellulose or starches in them.
What do silverfish look like?
Silverfish are around 1-2cm in length and tend to have a brown or silver colour. They have two long antennae at the front, a long tail at the back and two cerci (long tail-like appendages that act as a sensory organ).
Diet and habitat
Silverfish are found all over the world and will typically dwell in dark, hard-to-reach places. They are usually found in sheds, garages, bathrooms, kitchens and storage areas as they are fond of feeding on carbohydrates. This means anything that has cellulose or starches in it like paper, wallpaper, clothing, photos, etc.
Urban myths about silverfish
Despite the name, they’re not actually fish and have been around for hundreds of millions of years. Silverfish aren’t known to bite as they have considerably weak jaws that are not likely to pierce human skin. Despite what you’ve been told, silverfish aren’t going to crawl into your ear whilst you sleep and lay their eggs in your brain!
