Australian Cockroach
Australian cockroaches are common in many households in and around the northern suburbs of Brisbane. Typically they’re active at night and will crawl out from under dishwashers, in cupboards and anywhere there is moisture or food.
Some people will have allergic reactions to Australian cockroaches and the debri and feces they leave around your home has been known to trigger asthma sufferers. They also spread bacteria such as e.coli and salmonella, so it’s worth contacting a roach exterminator at the first signs of Australian cockroaches in your home.
What do Australian Cockroaches look like?
Australian Cockroaches (Periplaneta Australasiae) are around 20-35 mm long and have a brown coloured body with a distinctive yellow band around their heads. Smaller than their other common counterparts (the German, American, Smoky Brown and Oriental cockroach) they are often confused with the American cockroach.
Diet and habitat
Australian cockroaches have similar dietary habits to other common cockroaches found in Australia. They will eat pretty much anything including garbage, leftover food, feces, crumbs, meat and anything in between. They’re resilient animals, that’s why they’ve been alive for over 280 million years.
Do cockroaches carry disease or sickness?
You may have heard that cockroaches can carry disease and bacteria around your home, and that’s true to a degree. It’s unlikely you’re going to get sick from having a few cockroaches around your home, however, if you have a major infestation, this can definitely contribute to sickness in your home. The fact they eat rotten food and feces means they can trail the bacteria associated with these waste products over your food if it is left out on benches or in open packets.
