It’s 2:17 am. The house is silent, except for one sound that has you staring at the ceiling, wide awake. Scratch. Thump. Scuttle. When you hear noises in your roof, you aren't just annoyed – you’re unsettled. It’s invasive. It’s out of your control. And as the noise continues, your imagination starts to run wild. Is it big? Is there more than one? And most importantly: What kind of damage are they doing up there while I try to sleep?
If you are lying awake playing detective, you aren't alone. In Brisbane, roof voids offer the perfect warm, safe sanctuary for wildlife. But determining what has moved in is the first step to reclaiming your home.
Here is how to tell the difference between a possum, a rat and a mouse – and why you need to act fast.
The sound check: Who is living upstairs?
While we always recommend a professional inspection to be sure, the specific type of noise can give you big clues about your unwanted houseguest.
The heavy thumper: Possums
If it sounds like someone is wearing combat boots in your ceiling, you likely have a possum.
- The sound: Heavy, deliberate footsteps. You might hear loud thumping or banging as they jump from the eaves to the roof.
- The clue: You might also hear "dragging" noises (nesting material) or guttural hissing/growling.
- The timing: Possums are nocturnal and creatures of habit. You will often hear them leave shortly after dusk to forage and return heavily before dawn.
The catch: Possums are native wildlife and are protected by law in Queensland. You cannot bait them. They must be professionally removed and your roof "proofed" to stop them getting back in.
The scrabbler: Rats
If the noise is faster, lighter and more erratic, you are likely dealing with rats.
- The sound: Scurrying, scratching and gnawing. It often sounds like a chaotic race is happening above your head.
- The clue: The noise may be repetitive (gnawing on wood or wires) and tends to get louder and more frequent over time as they breed.
- The fear: “If I can hear one… are there more?” (the answer is usually yes).
The quiet skitterer: Mice
Mice are the ninjas of the roof void.
- The sound: Light scratching or nibbling. It is much quieter than a possum or rat.
- The clue: You might hear it directly inside wall cavities rather than just on the ceiling plasterboard.
- The danger: Don't let the small sound fool you. Mice multiply rapidly, and where there is one, a family is not far behind.
Why you can't just "wait and see"
We talk to many homeowners who hope the noise is just a one-off visitor that will leave on its own. We understand the hesitation – you might be worried about the cost or fearful of what we might find.
But a noise in the roof is rarely just a noise. It is often the sound of your home being slowly damaged.
- Fire risk: Rodents (rats and mice) have teeth that never stop growing. To keep them sharp, they chew. Electrical wiring is a favourite target, posing a genuine fire risk to your home.
- Health hazards: Pests leave droppings and urine in your insulation, which can cause odours and spread disease.
- Structural damage: Possums can move insulation around, exposing your ceiling, while leaking urine can stain your plasterboard.

When the scratching keeps you awake, the temptation to throw some supermarket bait into the manhole is strong. But this often backfires.
- The "dead in the wall" smell: If a rodent eats bait and crawls into an inaccessible wall cavity to die, the smell is unbearable and can last for weeks.
- The possum risk: If you have a possum and you use rat bait, you could accidentally poison native wildlife, which is illegal and cruel.
- The "block in": If you seal a hole without checking the roof first, you might trap a frantic animal inside, causing them to tear apart your ceiling in a panic to escape.
